No, I’ve never been a flirt.

23. Do you still talk to the person you went to Prom with?
If I’d gone to prom, then no, I haven’t talked to the guy I would have gone with since 1979.

24. Are you planning on going to your next reunion?
Doubtful. I went to the 10 year one, and I can’t imagine duplicating THAT scenario again.

25. Do you still talk to people from school?
I never stopped talking to the people who were important to me. Others I run into in passing, but I’m not using facebook to find high school people.

Wheat or Rye?

Anyone who knows Ethan knows that food is on the bottom of his list of concerns.  It’s just not a priority wtih him, and he’ll think of any reason not to discuss it.  This morning, while he was in the bathroom, I called out to him from the kitchen, “wheat or rye toast for breakfast?”  His response?

“I can’t talk to you about toast right now.  This pee-pee power is way too strong for me to talk about that.”

A visit with the pug puppies

Cristin’s neighbors have two pugs and this past weekend the momma pug delivered five babies. Today Cristin was babysitting for the mom and the puppies, and we didn’t hesitate to run over there to see them. Ethan really wants the one he’s holding, which is one of two males and the only black one. The others are all fawn with black masks.

We have every intention of visiting these babies at least once a week so we can watch them grow. They really are adorable and very hard to resist, but we will not be getting another dog in this house.

You can see more of the cuties here.

Happy 7 1/2 Birthday Ethan!

stuff-005

Today is the day that Ethan turns “seven and a half exactly.”  Today is the day you sing half of the birthday song.  “Happy Birthday Day to You, Happy Birthday to You, Hap.”  It’s the day you do everything, or as much as possible, in halves.

This year is a very special because Ethan turns 7 1/2, the age of Alice in Through the Looking-Glass.  This is where the entire idea for celebrating 1/2 birthdays began.  If you’re interested in a little more detail:

Alice is a fictional character in the books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which were written by Charles Dodgson under the pen name Lewis Carroll.

The character has been said to be based on Alice Liddell, a child friend of Dodgson’s. Dodgson said several times that his ‘little heroine’ was not based on any real child, but was entirely fictional.  Alice is portrayed as a quaintly logical girl, sometimes even pedantic, especially with Humpty Dumpty in the second book. According to Through the Looking-Glass, she is seven-and-a-half years old but seems to conduct herself like a somewhat older child. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland takes place on May 4th, Alice Liddell’s birthday. Through the Looking-Glass takes place on November 4th, her half-birthday (and Alice states that she is “seven and a half exactly.”)

We started the half birthday celebration on Friday.  I baked some huge cookies (I am seriously talking HUGE) for Ethan to share with his classmates, and had planned to have lunch with him, but the whole lost voice thing got in the way.  Yesterday I took him to Target (crappy as I felt) and let him pick out a little something.  Today we have plans to go see Mall Cop, and we’re hoping Adam wakes up soon so we can go out for breakfast.  If he continues to snooze then he’ll be taking us to dinner and it’ll be Ethan’s choice, which I can almost guarantee will be “Amigos”.

A lot of people consider half birthdays an indulgent waste.  And that’s fine.  However, I’m one who enjoys celerating the little things. The things that create memories.  I can remember being a kid, and I recall how long it seemed between each birthday, and how thrilled I was that my parents celebrated my half birthday each spring on May 8.  So why shouldn’t I give my own son this special memory and make his year a little more special by giving  him not one, but two of his own special days?

Happy Half Birthday, Ethan…I love you.

Today was a day to relax

Since I’ve been feeling a little blah the past two days, I decided we should just spend the day relaxing. Last year I bought a clicker couch for Ethan’s playroom. Today I let him turn it into the chaise and lounge while playing Animal Crossing. Look how itty bitty he looks on that thing.

We did make a quick trip to Target so he could pick out a little something for his 1/2 birthday which happens to be tomorrow. 7 1/2! How did that happen?!?

Just a slice will do

If only I’d realized that today is National Pie Day…I’d certainly have baked a pie. The difficulty would lie in deciding what kind of pie to bake. Pecan? Chocolate Pecan? Chocolate Cream? Coconut Cream? Banana Cream? Peach? Apple? Apple with vanilla ice cream? Pumpkin? Sweet Potato? Key Lime?

A little Pie Day history:

The American Pie Council created this day simply to celebrate the pie.

National Pie Day is a special day that is set aside to bake and cook all of your favorite pies. On this day, you are also encouraged to bake a few new pie recipes. And most importantly, it’s a day to eat pies!

A great way to celebrate National Pie Day is to bake some pies and give them away to friends, neighbors, and relatives. You never know, you may be starting a tradition of pie giving between your friends and family.

The American Pie Council sponsors the National Pie Championships. Some of the best pie makers in the world enter their pies. Perhaps you will enter and win the “American Pie Council’s Best Pie in America” award.

If you don’t feel like making a pie, then you need to watch “Waitress” tonight. It’s a great little film, and the main character is a pie baker. She creates pies, all sorts, with funny little names and all sorts of ingredients. Watch. You’ll be glad you did.

If you do feel like making a pie, either today or in the next few days, please share your recipe here. I’m going to make one this weekend, as can be expected undecided as to what I should bake.

Also, what’s your favorite pie? And if you say you don’t like pie, then you’re Un-American. After all, they don’t say “As American as Apple pie” for nothing.

Letter to the President

For homework tonight, Ethan had to write President Obama a lettter. Knowing Ethan, I’m pretty certain this won’t be the last letter he writes to our newly elected President. I think he did a pretty good job making sure he got all the important stuff covered. He kept it friendly, while reminding him of his promises. And then he ended iby mentioning his family. I’m not sure if that was his intention or if it just worked out that way.
